Artist Proposal for Art Parking Exhibition: “Urban Palimpsest”

image a Instance of Urban Palimpsest (a) 2024

David Lane, RedJade Yuan, Gregory Kreisman

Artist Proposal for Art Parking Exhibition: “Urban Palimpsest”

Artist Group: The Workers of the Manual for Everyday Life: David Lane, RedJade Yuan, Gregory Kreisman

Exhibition Title: Urban Palimpsest
Medium: Mixed Media Installation
Space Requirements: 3.5 x 5m parking space

Conceptual Framework:

“Urban Palimpsest,” part of “The Manual for Everyday Life” series, draws inspiration from the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of urban public works. This installation will explore the concept of emergent art arising from the mundane activities of city maintenance, such as the rearrangement of painted bricks initially marked for practical purposes like signaling bicycle parking or pedestrian paths. Over time, these utilitarian bricks become abstract representations when disturbed and rearranged by workers during routine repairs. This project celebrates this unintended art form, highlighting the fluid boundary between order and chaos, and planned art versus spontaneous creation.

Description of Artwork, Urban Palimpsest (b):

The installation will consist of over 200 bricks, each painted with high-durability outdoor paint to withstand environmental conditions. The bricks will feature a mix of simple stenciled images and slogans related to urban life, creating a cohesive yet variable visual language that participants can manipulate. The initial layout will mimic a recognizable street sign or directive, which will then evolve as the bricks are rearranged.

Three artists, dressed in workmen’s uniforms to blur the line between everyday city workers and creators, will initially arrange the bricks in a predefined pattern. Throughout the duration of the show, they will periodically rearrange the bricks, sometimes following a specific algorithm and at other times making random changes, to demonstrate the fluidity and randomness of urban transformations.

Interactive Element:

Visitors will be invited to engage directly with the installation by rearranging the bricks, thus participating in the continual creation and recreation of the work. This element of public participation is critical as it underscores the democratic aspect of urban space and the communal ownership of public artworks.

Additionally, a digital component will be integrated via a QR code that links to an app allowing visitors to design their own “brick tile portrait.” This app will let users select brick designs and shuffle them to create animated self-portraits, further exploring the theme of individual impact on public spaces.

Logistics and Setup:

Exhibition Goals:

“Urban Palimpsest” aims to highlight the unintentional artistry in everyday urban environments and encourage viewers to reconsider the aesthetic and functional values assigned to urban spaces and objects. This project fosters community interaction and creative expression, bridging the gap between public and art.

Conclusion:

Through “Urban Palimpsest,” I, alongside The Workers of the Manual for Everyday Life, seek to engage the Art Parking audience in a dialogue about the beauty and transformative potential of urban spaces. This interactive installation not only reflects on the nature of change in city landscapes but also empowers the public to be co-creators in the artistic process, thereby democratizing art and its creation.
